The Ecuador Criollo consists of Criollo cattle that have been classified into ‘biotypes’. A biotype in cattle refers to a distinct group based on their phenotypic and genotypic characteristics.
Ecuador Criollo cattle are divided into two groups:
• Sierra (inc. Páramo, Hoyas)
• Costa (inc. El Oro, Esmeraldas)
The Ecuador Criollo biotypes include:
• Bravo de Páramo
• Cajamarca/Pintado
• Colorado
• Encerado
• Esmeraldeño
• Galapagueño
• Jaspeado Manabita
• Macabeo
• Moro
• Negro Lojano/Black Lojano
• Pizán
