Esmeraldeño
(most common name)
local/other name (English):
• Esmerelda
According to Felius (1995), the Costa Criollo has disappeared from Ecuador along with two varieties: the Criollo de el Oro and the Criollo de Esmeraldes.
Mason (Dictionary 2020) lists the Costa of Ecuador as having been a larger variety of the Ecuador Criollo (including the El Oro and the Esmeraldas) and all are extinct.
However, Mason (Dictionary 2020) also lists the Esmerelda, Esmeraldeño as a current biotype of the Ecuador Criollo.
Ecuador does list the Esmeraldeño in the DAD-IS database, but only the name and that it is a local breed — nothing more.
This is confusing because the names Esmerelda/Esmeraldeño seem to be basically the same as Criollo de Esmeraldes/Esmeralda; further information or images have not yet been found.
