The Braford was developed around the same time in two different countries: Australia and the USA.

In Florida (USA) in 1937, Alto Adams Jr. started grading his Florida Scrub herd to Brahman. Then he introduced Hereford bulls into his herd and continued upgrading with his Hereford bulls for the next 15 years, finally establishing a Brahman (3/8) × Hereford (5/8).

Today, Braford cattle in the USA are considered an ‘open synthetic breed’ because several breeds are joined and selection is for function. Pedigree and commercial (unrecorded) Hereford, Polled Hereford, Brahman and zebu are used.

The Australian Braford was developed by Adam Rea starting in 1946.
