The Brazilian Braford is a crossbreed consisting of Hereford (5/8) and Nelore (3/8).
In 1967, the breeder Rubem Silveira Vasconcellos, from Rosário do Sul (RS), began importing Brahman cattle from the USA. He then crossed them with Hereford cattle.
His success led to various crossing schemes involving Hereford and zebu. The two most noted were:
• Braford Santa Clara - a composite of zebu (3/8) and Polled Hereford (5/8) used by Rubem Vasconcellos on the Santa Clara ranch in Rio Grande do Sul
• Pampiana Braford - a composite used by the West Frontier Breeders’ Center
(Spanish) Pampa = Hereford
In 1983, the Associação Brasileira de Criadores de Hereford e Polled Hereford (ABCHPH; Brazilian Association of Breeders of Hereford and Polled Hereford) began accepting registration of Braford animals and they were initially called Pampiano-Braford. After a short period, the name was shortened to Braford to facilitate international trade.
The Braford was officially recognized as a breed in 2003 in Brazil.
