The Velásquez was developed by José Velásquez from 1955 to 1983 at Hacienda Africa, La Dorada in the department of Caldas in Colombia. Velásquez was a veterinarian and dean of the veterinary medicine faculty of the Universidad Nacional (National University).
A crossbreeding program using Red Poll × (Red Brahman × Romosinuano) with selection for a red coat and beef characteristics culminated in the Velásquez, which is comparable to the Jamaica Red.
Today, the Velásquez is a composite of:
• 50% Red Poll
• 25% Red Brahman
• 25% Romosinuano
