The Tarina began with imported Tarentaise bulls (from the department of Savoie in France) that were used to improve the local cattle near the city of Turin in the region of Piedmont during the 1800s.

Although a herdbook was started in 1888 — the Tarina was not officially recognized as a breed until 1949.

The Tarina is now considered extinct.
