Podolica
(most common name)
(transboundary/brand name):
• Podolian
(local/other name):
• Apulian Podolian (English)
• Podolica italiana
• Podolica pugliese
• Razza Podolica italiana
The Podolica probably descends from the Istrian cattle of Croatia; microsatellite studies show a strong relationship.
The Podolica also shows the Robertsonian chromosomal translocation rob(1;29) — associated with reduced bull fertility — at a fairly high frequency.
According to Felius (1995), the Podolica had its first herdbook and breed society in 1931. Mason (Encyclopedia 2016) states that a herdbook was started in 1937.
Podolica cows are also often used as a maternal breed and mated with:
• Charolais
• Chianina
• Limousin
• Marchigiana
Podolica varieties include:
• Calabrian (Podolica Calabrese; from Calabria)
• Companian (Calabrese, Podolica Compania; from Compania)
• Pugliese (Podolica Pugliese; from Puglia)
Extinct Podolica varieties include:
• Abruzzese (Podolica abruzzese di montagna)
• Lucanian (Lucana, Podolica Lucana)
• Murgese
• Venetian (Pugliese del basso Veneto)
