The Piemontese is a locally derived Podolian breed that recent SNP genotyping has shown to be grouped with Montbéliard, Vosges, Abondance, Tarentaise, and Brown Swiss.

The Piemontese began development in the northwest of Italy over 250 years ago. Because Piemontese calves are born quite slender, the breed does not have as many calving problems as do other double-muscled breeds (e.g. Belgian Blue). The Piemontese double-muscling (a groppa doppia, doppia coscia) develops as they age.

Podolian cattle breeds have calves born with a fawn to reddish coat that turns grey or white after about five months of maturing.

The white Podolian breeds of Italy are larger and also have more muscle and shorter horns than other Podolians.
