The Parda started with Swiss Brown cattle that were first imported into Spain in 1850; the majority were imported during 1880–1910. They replaced local breeds such as the Tudanca and Leonese around Oviedo (the capital city of the Principality of Asturias) and Girona (a town in Catalonia between the Cantabrian Mountains and the Bay of Biscay). Swiss Brown were also used to upgrade the Asturiana.
NOTE: As of 2018, the Parda is listed by Spain in DAD-IS as a seperate breed with a separate population count and separate morphology information from the Parda de Montaña and the Bruna dels Pirineus (Catalan for ‘Brown of the Pyrenees’).
