Tudanca
(most common name)
(transboundary/brand name)
(local/other name):
• Raza Tudanca
The Tudanca, traditionally a draught breed, is now a specialized niche beef breed. They are tall but not particularly bulky. Although not a dairy breed (milk yields were very low), it is said that butter made from Tudanca milk has a very distinctive flavor.
For the first 2 months of age, Tudanca calves are light red in color. After that, the following adult coat colors develop:
• bulls - black with a white eel-stripe down the back, white muzzleband
• cows - light blond or blue-greyish (depending on which of two types of hair predominates), white muzzleband, white udder (usually), white ‘spectacles’ (usually)
• hosca hair - black at the base and white at the tip
• tasuga hair - white at the base and black at the tip
Between 1955 and 1982, Tudanca numbers were greatly reduced (they were even once classified as in danger of extinction) due to competition from imported dairy breeds and increased farm mechanization.
• 1947 - first Tudanca breed society established
• 1978 - new Tudanca breed society formed to conserve remaining population
