• Bianca val padana
• Carpigiana
• Modenese di pianura
• White Po (English)
The Modenese is believed to be a Podolian breed and native to the area of Carpi in Modena province.
The Modenese possibly originated from Reggiana × Romagnola.
In the 1800s, two strains were known:
• Carpigiana - in the Carpa Hills
• Modenese di pianura - a lowlands type on the Po plains
• 1860 - officially named ‘Modenese’
• 1957 - Modenese herdbook established
• 1975 - Modenese herdbook discontinued
• 1985 - conservation initiatives began
The Modenese is mainly bred for meat; their milk is used for production of a specific Parmesan cheese.
Podolian cattle breeds have calves born with a fawn to reddish coat that turns grey or white after about five months of maturing.
The white Podolian breeds of Italy are larger and also have more muscle and shorter horns than other Podolians.
