The Jiaxian Red is bred in central Henan province in the counties of:
• Baofeng
• Jiaxian
• Kaifeng
• Luoyang
• Lushan
• and adjoining counties
The Jiaxian Red was once used primarily for work, however now they are raised for beef and lard.
The Jiaxian Red is of mixed taurine and zebu origin in terms of Y chromosome microsatellites and mtDNA; SNPs show a close relationship to:
• Luxi
• Nanyang
• Qinchuan
Microsatellite studies with rather limited numbers (12) show the Jiaxian Red to be related to:
• Dabieshan
• Pinglu Mountain
• Qinba
Jiaxian Red MHC studies confirm a relationship with:
• Zaosheng
A breeding and conservation center for the Jiaxian Red was established in 2004.
