The Curraleiro descends from Criollo cattle.

In Brazil, intermediate crossbred cattle using zebu and European/Criollo cattle are called azebuados. During the 19th century, the Curraleiro was bred extensively to zebu cattle.

Zebu Y chromosomes are reported in the Curraleiro, however, according to a microsatellite study this admixture is less evident than in other Brazilian Criollo breeds.
