The Crioulo Lageano is a dual-purpose beef/dairy breed that now has some zebu blood.
The Crioulo Lageano can be found in the municipality of Lages which is in the central part of the southern coastal state of Santa Catarina, in the region known as Planalto Serrano. The Serrano plateau is about 100 kilometers from the coast of the state; mountains exceed a thousand meters of elevation and the climate is subtropical. The name ‘Crioulo Lageano’ refers to Lages (formerly Lajens).
The Crioulo Lageano as a breed began on the Canoas farm where local cattle of the Southern Crioulo type were gathered during the 1950s from throughout the region of Ponte Alta in Santa Caterina.
The Crioulo Lageano is very well adapted to the rocky terrain of the Lages region (which registers the lowest temperatures in Brazil) and the females are known for their easy calving and good maternal abilities. Microsatellite studies confirm zebu affinity and there is documented use of Nelore bulls in the 1980s.
The Crioulo Lageano has long, lyre-shaped horns. A polled variety is known as the Polled Crioulo Pereira Camargo.
Coat colors of the Crioulo Lageano include:
• black
• brown
• white
• brown and red, on a white background
• patches and spots of red, brown, black, on a white background
• occasionally bay (reddish-brown), on a white background
• jaguané (brown flanks and white spots on the back, belly preferably white and legs brown)
