Casanareño
(most common name)
(local/other name):
• Casanare
• Llanero
• Llanos Criollo
The Casanareño, which began in western Venezuela, is found in the departments of Casanare and Arauca in northeastern Colombia.
The Casanareño is a Criollo that has adapted surprisingly well to a savannah of inhospitable conditions where high tropical temperatures and extensive flooding occurs from streams flowing towards the Orinoco River.
This savannah is the Orinoquía region and belongs to the Orinoco River watershed. It is also known as the Eastern Plains or Llanos (from the Spanish Llanos Orientales).
Of all the Colombian Criollo breeds, the Casanareño has the highest genetic variability (lack of consistency). Microsatellites show a very close relation to:
• Sanmartinero
• Costeño con Cuernos
• Romosinuano
The Casanareño have supposedly been kept untamed on the Llanos for over four centuries. Their coat is a light brown or tan (sometimes brindled) with darker shading in the bulls. They are hardy cattle and used for beef. The female is mainly used in crosses with Brahman bulls and because of this the pure Casanareño breed may become lost.
(Spanish) Llanos = Plains
