Mark Weinstein is a social networking pioneer and one of the world's foremost privacy advocates. He has served as a Steering Committee Member of the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC) – a US government initiative belonging to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

NSTIC began in April 2011 and works on improving the privacy and security of our online transactions. Mr. Weinstein has also been named an Ambassador of Privacy by Design by Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Commissioner of Ontario, Canada.

In 1998, he founded SuperFamily.com and SuperFriends.com. Both were included in PC Magazine's “Top 100” sites and were forerunners to today’s social networks.

In 2011, he founded Sgrouples, the world's first social network focused on the privacy rights of its members. Sgrouples served as the beta for the development of the present-day MeWe social network.

On December 11, 2014, Mr. Weinstein most helpfully answered questions from our radio club about cookies tracking us and how kids can stay safe online.

The Kranky Kids Radio Club students were greatly alarmed to learn how much they are being watched and tracked. Their mouths fell open when they learned that their emails were being read and their pictures taken from their accounts for advertising purposes.

1

2
Question: “Can they take the photos from our phones? Can't we just use Snapchat for photos?”

3
Question: “Please tell us more about cookies and what they are. How are they used to track us?”

4
Question: “Can we stop anyone from tracking us?”

5
Question: “What can we kids do to be safe online?”

6
Question: “Why do you care so much about our privacy?”

Mark Weinstein is also the award-winning author of the Habitually Great book series, so a general query about habits was raised.

7
Question: “What habits can we get into?”

The Kranky Kids Radio Club offered a hearty Thank You with applause for Mark Weinstein and his superb answers to our questions about online privacy, and especially, for alerting us as to what we should be aware of and how to protect ourselves:
