The Vestlandsk Fjordfe was developed from 1866–1895 as a fusion of the Hordaland and the Westland Grey Möre.
The Vestlandsk Fjordfe was amalgamated in 1947 with the Westland Red Polled (which had already absorbed the Lyngdal) and all were then renamed the South and West Norwegian.
However, the Vestland Fjord remained recognizable within the South and West Norwegian population. In 1989, conservation programs were started for the Vestland Fjord and the Vestlandsk raudkolle. Both breeds were restored and are now reported as separate breeds again.
