Turino
(historical breed name)
(most common name):
• Frisia
(local/other name):
• Holandese
• Luso-Holandese
• Portuguese Friesian
The Turino was the dominant breed name as recently as 1969 in both Portugal and Brazil for their Holstein-Friesian population. Although the name ‘Turino’ (also documented as ‘turina’) is still in minimal use, currently, Brazil uses ‘Holandesa’ and Portugal uses ‘Frísia’.
In old Portuguese slang, the word ‘turino’ translates to ‘dandy’ in English.
The prefix ‘Luso-’ comes from ‘Lusitania’ which is one of two official Latin names for Portugal (used especially in the Vatican State in Rome).
