The Tharparkar is a dual-purpose breed found in the southeastern Sind region which is adjacent to the Thar Desert (also called the Great Indian Desert) on the India/Pakistan border.
More specifically, the Tharparkar originated in the districts of Jodhpur, Barmer, Jaisalmer and Sri Ganganagar of Rajasthan state, and in Kutch district of Gujarat state (both in India), and in southeast Sind province in Pakistan.
Although genetic studies are inconclusive, based on visible phenotype and breeders’ accounts, the Tharparkar has been influenced by:
• Gir
• Kankrej
• Nagori
• Red Sindhi
