The Tabapuã is named after the municipality of Tabapuã in the state of São Paulo in Brazil which is where the breed first started.
The Tabapuã originated in the 1930s from one polled Guzerá × Nelore ♂ (born in 1940) and used on Nelore cows on the ‘Agua Milagrossa’ farm owned by the Ortenblad family.
Today, the Tabapuã is described in DAD-IS as a composite of Polled Indo-Brazilian ♂︎ × Nelore ♀︎.
