The Sudanese Fulani, a counterpart of the White Fulani, has an origin that is similar to that of the Gobra of Senegal (they merge in transition zones).

The Sudanese Fulani is found mainly all over southern and southwestern Mali, along the floodplains of the Inner Niger Delta (known as the Macina). These are the regions of Ségou, Mopti and Timbuktu (Tombouctou) which are in the semi-arid Sahel area (a transitional area between desert and savannah), just south of the Sahara desert.

The Sudanese Fulani is also found in Burkina Faso (and Côte d’Ivoire, though they are not listed in DAD-IS). In Burkina Faso, interbreeding with humpless cattle takes place.

Sudanese Fulani are also interbred with Azaouak and Tuareg (Zébu Touareg) cattle in eastern Mali during their seasonal migrations. As a result of crossbreeding, their horns can be much more varied in size and shape; their coat coloring also varies based on location.

DAD-IS lists four other Zébu Peul (Fulani Zebu) for Mali:
• Zébu Peul Sambourou (Sambourou Fulani)
• Zébu Peul Toronké (Toronké Fulani)
• Zébu Peul du Macina (Fulani of Macina)
• Zébu Peul Bororo (Bororo Fulani)

While searching for good grazing and water, Fulani herdsman are known to have these cattle treking distances of up to 300 km (approx. 186 miles).
