The Selenge is a locally developed beef crossbreed using a Kazakh Whiteheaded bull and a Mongolian cow (Kazakh Whiteheaded × Mongolian). Selenge is a province in the northern part of Mongolia through which flows the Selenga River (Selenge gol in Mongolian).

The Selenge is well adapted to the climatic, vegetation and geographic conditions of the area and they survive under year-round pastoral herding. Water is scarce and the animals graze under severe weather and unfavorable feeding conditions.
