Saavedreño -bull- Bolivia

Saavedreño
(most common name)

(local/other name):
• Santa Cruz

The Saavedreño has a coat color that varies from a Guernsey color (without the white patches) to a Jersey color.

The breed name ‘Saavedreño’ comes from the Saavedra Experiment Station. This is where selected Criollo cows (with above average milk performance) and bulls were brought to breed. Semen and bulls were then imported from other high-performance Criollo herds that were living in similar humid tropical environments in Cuba, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Brazil.

Saavedreño bulls are used for:
• crossbreeding with Holstein or Brown Swiss (these crossbreds regularly produce more than 20 kg milk per day at calving)
• purebreeding in areas where supplementary feeding is impossible/uneconomic (cattle graze in pastures or browse)

Saavedreño crossbreds on average are healthier, more fertile and more resistant to parasites.
