Karelia (Karjala in Finnish) is an area currently divided between Russia and Finland. In DAD-IS, Russia lists the breed ‘Karelian’ as the equivalent to the Red Pied Karelian of Finland — and — Russia also lists this ‘Karelian’ as extinct as of 2006.
However, according to Mason (Encyclopedia 2016), a new dairy breed to be known as ‘Karelian’ was patented in 2013 in Karelia and is based on the Finnish Ayrshire. As of 2021, there is no listing in DAD-IS for this new breed.
