The Rana may or may not still be found on the island Republic of Madagascar.

The Rana is a mixed crossbreed that started in 1840 with imported French dairy cattle being crossed with the local native Madagascar Zebu cattle.

Breeds imported include:
Bordelaise
Gasconne
• Garonnais (extinct)
Breton Black Pied

Normandes were imported 1926–1930 and greatly influenced the visible phenotype.

Friesians were imported from 1945; then Norwegian Red admixtures took place.
