The Madagascar Zebu is a distinct breed whose history can be traced back to the first and second millennia BC.
These cattle vary in appearance depending on their habitat on Madagascar — which is the fourth-largest island in the world.
As the principal cattle breed on Comoros (an African country that is a group of islands north of Madagascar), their color can be mahogany red to dark fawn.
On the island of Réunion, cattle known as Moka are also a Madagascar Zebu type. (Réunion, an island in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, is officially known as Department of Réunion and is an overseas department and region of France.)
