(local/other name):
• Abigar
• Anuak
The Nuer is a variety of Nilotic.
The Nuer is named after the Nuer people — a confederation of ethnic groups found in South Sudan and western Ethiopia.
The Nuer deliberately deform the horns of bulls that are raised as ‘song ox’ which are usually chosen because their type or color is unusual from the rest of the herd. The young men curve the horns and also attach switch plumes to the ends. ‘Song ox’ are worshipped in song and indulged as beloved pets.
The Nuer sanga is smaller and exhibits zebu influence.
