Nilotic
(most common name)
(local/other name):
• Southern Sudanese
• Sudanese Longhorn
The Nilotic evolved from sanga cattle in Ethiopia and then migrated across southwestern Ethiopia into what is now South Sudan. They are found around the White Nile region and also along the border of Ethiopia and South Sudan.
The White Nile is a wide and shallow river that connects with the Blue Nile at Khartoum (capitol of Sudan) to form the Nile proper. The Blue Nile originates from Lake Tana in northern Ethiopia.
Nilotics differ in size and have variable hump sizes; smaller animals are found in the west and larger, heavier animals in the east.
Identified Nilotic varieties include:
• Abigar
• Aliab Dinka
• Aweil Dinka
• Eastern Nuer
• Nuer
• Shilluk
• Wadai-Dinka
