Minnan
闽南牛
(most common name)
(local/other name):
• Min
The Minnan originated in the following Prefectures in Fujian province:
• Zhangpu
• Longhai
• Pinghe
• Tong’an
• Nan’an
• Zhangzhou
The Minnan coat tends to be:
• yellowish-brown
(bulls can be black)
• blackish parts on the head and neck
• blackish parts on underside of the scrotum
• blackish rims at the front of the light colored lower part of the legs
• blackish rims along the hooves
• black tail-switch
Minnan bulls have a well developed hump and dewlap. Y chromosome microsatellites are of zebu type. Both zebu and taurine mtDNA types are present and Minnan are close genetically to the Hainan (but somewhat distant geographically). Colonists could have possibly brought cattle of Minnan type from Fujian province to Hainan.
Minnan cattle were supposedly placed in conservation protection in 2000.
