The Meuse-Rhine-Yssel is named after the three rivers which surround the area where this red-pied breed was developed.

MRY cattle were initially selected for both their dairy attributes and heavy-muscling — making them a true dual-purpose breed. However, starting in the 1970s, more emphasis on their milking prevailed. Today, heavy use of Red Holstein (USA) blood has achieved this result.
