The Maas-Rijn-IJssel was originally a dual-purpose dairy/beef breed.

During the 1950s, the Maas-Rijn-IJssel was turned into a single-purpose dairy breed and its pied coat changed from being a dark red with little white to a predominately white coat with less red. This was mainly due to one particular bull named ‘Prince’.

Not wanting to lose the original coat coloration and its dual-purpose tradition is what prompted breeders to create the Brandrood.
