Mallorquina -bull- Majorca

Mallorquina
(most common name)

(local/other name):
• Bou de la raça Mallorquina (Catalán)
Majorcan

The Mallorquina originates from the Marinera — a Rojo Convexo (Red Convex) type of local cattle that centuries ago spread throughout the Balearic Islands (which are near the eastern coast of the Iberian peninsula).

Indigenous cattle of the northwest Iberian Peninsula were given the general name ‘Rojo Convexo’. These cattle were large, rounded and blond/brown in color.

The Mallorquina is small to medium in size, reflecting their mountainous environment.

The Mallorquina coat can be:
• red
• light chestnut (blond)
• chestnut
• dark chestnut (almost black)

Microsatellite studies of the Mallorquina show gene frequencies differ from those found in mainland Spanish breeds and this hints at isolation.
