The Lugware belongs to the Small East African Zebu cattle group and is related to the Mongalla and the Nkedi.
The Lugware is thought to have developed from cattle that were brought from the Nile Valley in Sudan — to its present breeding areas — during the 18th century.
The various names for the Lugware come from the names of the different tribes who own them.
