The Mongalla belongs to the Small East African Zebu cattle group.
Although they have many different coat colorings — grey and dun are predominant in the Mongalla.
The Mongalla is kept by several Nilotic and Hamitic tribes/people — there are three main varieties:
• Bari - kept by the Bari people
• Didinga - kept by the Didinga people
• Latuka - kept by the Latuka-Lango tribes
