Lakenvelder
(most common name)
(transboundary/brand name):
• Dutch Belted
The Lakenvelder appears as early as the 17th century in Dutch paintings.
Belief that the Lakenvelder and Belted Galloway cattle are descended from belted Swiss Brown cattle has been supported by molecular genetics (Drogemuller et al., 2010) which shows the presence of the same candidate gene in all three.
The belted color pattern of the Lakenvelder has been continued by selective breeding, although a solid-colored individual can sometimes be found in a purebred herd.
The Lakenvelder herdbook permits grading-up with inspection requirements. The white belt must be at least 20 cm wide at its narrowest point; no other white markings are permitted on the head and limbs. The tongue, hoofs and horns should be dark pigmented. Body color can be red or black.
