Jinnan
晋南黄牛
(most common name)
local/other name (English):
• Jinnan Yellow
The Jinnan, found in Yuncheng and Linfen in southwest Shanxi province, is a highly regarded beef breed. The counties Wanrong, Hejin and Linyi have the largest population with the best quality.
The Jinnan can be described as:
• light to dark red coat
• long body
• delicate legs
• bulls have medium-sized head
• cows have short heads and short thick necks
Y chromosomes and mtDNA show the Jinnan having taurine and zebu affinity in both the male and female lines. A study of 10 microsatellites indicate a close relation between the Jinnan, Luxi and Qinchuan.
In 2000, a conservation project for the Jinnan was announced by the Ministry of Agriculture.
