Javanese -bull calf- Indonesia

Javanese
(most common name in English)

(common name name):
Jawa
(local/other name):
• Bos javanicus (Latin)

The Javanese is a small-humped zebu.

Java cattle, found in remote areas of eastern Java (such as Pacitan Regency and Tengger Mountains), are thought to have evolved from a mixture of Indo-Chinese cattle crossed with zebu and banteng.

At the beginning of the 1900s, Java cattle had the same height and weight as the modern Madura (which they resemble). They became less well-developed due to an unfavorable environment.

The Javanese may or may not still exist due to continuous crossbreeding with Ongole zebus starting in the late 1800s. The last Javanese population estimate was 2,000 in 1987.
