The Hinterwälder is an old breed of Black Forest cattle and has changed little over the centuries.
Described as the smallest high-yielding dual-purpose breed in Middle Europe, Hinterwälders are also the smallest-bodied breed in Germany; they are found in the extreme southwest of Germany in the Black Forest bordering Switzerland.
• 1829 - Hinterwälder formally described
• 1889 - Hinterwälder herdbook association formed
• 1901 - Hinterwälder herdbook established
• 1970s - admixtures of Simmental and Vorderwald bulls were made for developing a more beef-oriented suckler (Fleischnutzung) type
• 1982 - government assistance began to help stabilize numbers
• 1984 - Hinterwälder herdbook in Switzerland established
• 1994 - Hinterwälder Fleischnutzung now distinguished
The Hinterwälder is considered to be ‘at risk’ with a population of 406 as of 2019.
