local/other name (English):
• Black Pied Dairy Cattle
The German Black Pied Dairy is now a historical breed. Developed in East Germany during the 1950s and 1960s from local German Black Pied Lowland cattle, this was a dual-purpose breed mostly oriented towards milk.
Because of restraints on animal feed and a shortage of butter at that time, a smaller body with a high milk fat content was the priority. Danish Jersey and Holstein (USA) used in upgrading resulted in a breed of approximately 25% original German Black Pied Lowland, 25% Danish Jersey and 50% Holstein.
Although successful as a breed, German reunification brought about a rapid integration of the German Black Pied Dairy into the German Holstein population.
(German) Schwarzbuntes Milchrind = black and white dairy cattle
