The Dominican Criollo is a variety of the Tropical Dairy Criollo.
In 1977 (Felius, 1995) or 1976 (Mason Encyclopedia, 2016) at Santiago de los Caballeros, a conservation and improvement program for the Dominican Criollo began. Santiago de los Caballeros, or simply Santiago, is the capital of Santiago Province and is located in the northern part of the country.
The program was focused on conserving and developing local Criollo cattle of the dairy type for use by non-industrial farmers. Semen of Tropical Dairy Criollo sires from the Turrialba herd has been used and the resulting Dominican Criollo bulls have, in turn, been used for crossing with Holstein and Brown Swiss cows with the goal of increasing the adaptability of those breeds to a tropical environment.
The Dominican Criollo coat hair is described as being short, coarse and scarce. Coat colors range from a light dun to yellow to a dark red and even black, with the points often being black.
