The Criollo Mexicano is a subtype of Mexican Criollo.
Criollo Mexicano is now the name used for the Criollo de Chihuahua. These animals are raised for beef and rodeo work.
The Asociación de Criadores de Ganado Criollo Mexicano (Mexican Criollo Cattle Breeders Association) was formed in 1995.
The Criollo Mexicano is the product of natural selection and has adapted to adverse ecological conditions.
Criollo Mexicano characteristics include:
• ability to thrive with minimal mineral supplementation
• good ability to produce meat in more or less competitive conditions
• very active and vigorous bulls with high fertility that are used for breeding heifers to facilitate calving
• cows with excellent maternal skills
• ability to thrive on rough terrain and difficult pasture conditions
• ability to thrive on a diverse diet (unlike many specialized breeds)
• docile and agile
• ability to walk long distances in rough terrain (ravines and mountains) with extreme climates
• resistant to parasites and diseases
