The Carreña is the original name for the Asturian Valley because breeding is centered in the Carreño Valley of Northwest Spain.

Y chromosome studies of the Carreña confirm a close relation to the Asturian Mountain and there is documentation of admixture of Simmental, Friesian and Brown Swiss during the first half of the 20th century.
