The Asturian Valley is found in the western valleys of the Cantabrian Mountains in northwest Spain and, though once a triple-purpose breed, is now selected for beef.
The Asturian Valley has a high frequency of double-muscling and is part of the Ternera Asturiana PDO (Protected Designation of Origin). Even though 85% of the herds are in Asturias, the Asturian Valley is also widespread elsewhere in western Spain.
