In the USA, a program of crossbreeding British beef and Brahman cattle was begun at the USDA Ag experiment station in Jeanerette, Louisiana. The intent was to create a profitable breed adapted to the climate, insects, and diseases of the Gulf Coast.

By 1932, the Angus finally won out as the preferred breed to cross with which then led to Brahman (c. 3/8) × Aberdeen-Angus (c. 5/8).

Of the private breeders, Raymond Pope became the prime promoter of the Brangus. In 1949, the International Brangus Breeders Association was established.

The Brangus can be found in about 26 states, including Hawaii.

Starting in the 1930s, Brahman × Angus crossings were done in Australia. In 1951, Lionel De Landelles of Rockhampton bred a bull named ‘Cherokee Lothar’ which became a foundation sire of the Australian Brangus. The Australian Brangus Cattle Association was formed in 1961.
