The grid on the left of the Timeline is the Patch Panel and it allows you to build up to 99 tracks each of audio and video.

To add a track:

Sequence - Insert Tracks

The Patch Panel determines which track is being edited.
(You can also drag the connections with your cursor if the Keyboard Shortcuts below aren't making you happy.)

Patches:

To connect a Patch (on tracks 1 through 9):

Video Patch connect: F6 + track # (F6 plus track number)
Audio Patch A1 connect: F7 + track # (F7 plus track number)
Audio Patch A2 connect: F8 + track # (F8 plus track number)

If a Patch is disconnected, your edit should not affect it.

To disconnect a Patch (on tracks 1 through 9):

Video Patch disconnect: ⇧F6 + track # (Shift-F6 plus track number)
Audio Patch A1 disconnect: ⇧F7 + track # (Shift-F7 plus track number)
