The Zanzibar Zebu is found on the Zanzibar Archipelago which is in the Indian Ocean and belongs to Tanzania.
The main islands are Unguja and Pemba. Most Zanzibar cattle (3% are improved breeds) are found on Pemba which has not had the tsetse fly since 1997.
The Zanzibar Zebu is thought to have Indian admixture, introduced through the port of Barawa in Somalia.
The Zanzibar Zebu can be described as:
• red coat (light red, dun, roan)
• black or grey coat
• small-bodied
• small horns
• a pronounced hump
