Yanbian
延边牛
(most common name)
local/other name (Englsih):
• Changbai Local Cattle
The Yanbian is a transitional breed that evolved from the combination of Turano-Mongolian cattle and Central Chinese Yellow cattle.
The Yanbian (both male and female) has been one of the best working breeds in China. By nature tame and cooperative, Yanbian bulls do not require castration in order to be used for work pulling in the fields and hauling on the road.
This Yanbian, also systematically selected for beef performance since around 1949, can be found in the provinces of Jilin, Heilongjiang and Liaoning. Yanbian beef is finding a place in premium markets.
In terms of Y chromosomal microsatellites and mtDNA lineages, the Yanbian is predominantly a taurine breed. Other microsatellite studies show a closeness to:
• Anxi
• Mongolian
• Changbai
MHC studies also confirm Yanbian distinctiveness and its more completely taurine heritage.
Yanbian varieties include:
• Chaoxian (Changbai Mountains, Jilin province, on the border with North Korea)
• Yanjiang (Dandong and Kuandian, Liaoning province)
