The Yakut is a Turano-Mongolian breed and is the only breed of original Siberian cattle that is not extinct. Purebred Yakut are extremely rare due to crossbreeding in the area.
The Yakut shows resistance to tuberculosis, leukosis and brucellosis.
The Yakut is highly adapted to extreme cold and very difficult feeding conditions. Thick hair covers the udder and the body to protect them from the cold and midges (small flies).
Turano-Mongolian, in reference to cattle, refers to a distinctive skull formation that includes:
• a wedge-shaped skull
• a depression on the frontal bone
• a narrow crown
• horns growing straight-up
