Sources disagree on the origination of the Xinjiang Brown.
Felius (Encyclopedia 1995):
The Xinjiang Brown started development in the Tacheng District in Xinjiang province by crossing Hazake cattle with the Swiss Brown (imported since 1951). Up until the third generation, backcrossing to Swiss Brown was practiced; after which inter se breeding became the usual procedure. To improve performance, further crossing with:
• 1977 - Swiss Brown imported from Germany
• 1988 - Swiss Brown imported from Austria
Mason (Encyclopedia 2016):
The Xinjiang Brown started by crossing local cattle with the Ala-Tau up until the third generation and then interbred with selection. To improve performance, further crossing with:
• 1977 - Brown Swiss imported from Germany
• 1988 - Brown Swiss imported from Austria
DAD-IS simply says: ‘composite of Ala-Tau, Brown Swiss (male) and indigenous breed (female)’.
