The Ukrainian Simmental is a dual-purpose dairy/beef breed.

At the start of the 1800s, Simmental cattle from Germany were introduced to the Chernigiv region in northern Ukraine. They were crossed with Ukrainian Grey cattle.

By 1997, Ukrainian Simmental numbers were declining. (As of 2019, the population is only 9,777.)

However, in 2004, another Ukrainian breed called Simmental Beef was established and a herdbook opened. Both breeds go by the Ukrainian breed local name of ‘Symmentalska’.

Breeds developed using the Ukrainian Simmental include:
Ukrainian Beef
Ukrainian Red-and-White (Ukrainian Red Spotted) - dairy
Znamensk (Znamenskaya) - beef
